What is IMEI Number Registration
In today's digital age, as technology continues to advance rapidly, we also face increasing risks of network-related frauds. Mobile phones have become indispensable tools for communication. According to a study by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), smartphone revenue reached USD 78 billion in 2019, but due to the pandemic, it is projected to decline to USD 71 billion, a decrease of 6% year-over-year.
Despite these advancements, millions of phones are stolen daily, with thousands of FIRs filed in India alone. The IMEI number plays a crucial role in tracking stolen phones. IMEI, or International Mobile Equipment Identity, is a unique identifier assigned to every 3GPP and iDEN mobile phone, as well as some satellite phones.
You can usually find the IMEI number printed on the internal part of the battery compartment or displayed on-screen by dialing *#06# on the dial pad. It is also often found alongside other system information in the settings menu of smartphone operating systems. This number is assigned by the manufacturer during production and cannot be altered or erased.
Each IMEI number complies with mobile communication standards, such as 3GPP TS 22.016. It is used internationally for tracking the location of devices and blocking network access for lost or stolen mobile phones. Different brands of mobile devices have their own IMEI numbers, such as Samsung IMEI or Nokia IMEI.
Scope for IMEI Registration
For manufacturers, every mobile equipment manufacturer or brand owner needs to register on https://imeidb.gsma.com/ to obtain their IMEI registration certificate.
For importers, every importer of mobile equipment must log in to the online portal using their user ID and password. They need to submit the application form before the specified date for IMEI certification of the mobile handset IMEI lot being imported into the Indian market. The GSMA automated system, ICDR (IMEI Cloning and Duplication Restriction), will then validate the information against the worldwide GSMA reporting body, which generates TACs (Type Allocation Codes). Only if the validated information is found to be correct will the registration certificate be allotted for the import of any type of mobile equipment.
