Introduction:
BIS CRS Registration: Utility-interconnected photovoltaic Inverter is the source to save energy, also known as solar inverters. A grid-connected photovoltaic system is an electricity generating solar PV power system that is connected to the utility grid. A grid-connected PV system consists of solar panels, one or several inverters, a power conditioning unit and grid connection equipment. The goal of this standard is to define the requirements for connecting PV systems/inverters to the utility distribution system, as well as to provide a test procedure for evaluating utility-interconnected photovoltaic (PV) power systems that operate in parallel with the utility and use static (solid-state) non-islanding inverters for DC to AC conversion. On 30 June 2020, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has required Utility-Interconnected Photovoltaic inverters to be registered as per IS 16221 : 2015 & IS 16169 : 2014 under the Compulsory Registration Scheme from BIS.

Utility-interconnected photovoltaic inverters, also known as grid-tied inverters, are a critical component of grid-connected solar power systems. These inverters play a pivotal role in converting the direct current (DC) electricity generated by solar panels into alternating current (AC) electricity suitable for use in homes or to feed into the electrical grid. Unlike off-grid solar systems that rely on energy storage, utility-interconnected inverters are designed to work in conjunction with the existing utility grid.
They ensure a seamless and efficient integration of solar power into the grid, allowing excess electricity to be fed back to the utility in a process known as net metering or to offset energy consumption when solar generation is insufficient. These inverters also provide safety mechanisms to disconnect from the grid in the event of a power outage, preventing the backflow of electricity to protect utility workers.
IS 16221 (Part 2):2015 and IS 16169:2014 are important standards for manufacturers of utility-interconnected photovoltaic inverters. IS 16221 (Part 2) and IS 16169 set the requirements for the design, construction, and testing of utility-interconnected photovoltaic inverters. Manufacturers who adhere to these standards can produce dependable and durable inverters. Complying with these standards is a prerequisite for certification and regulatory approval, allowing manufacturers to market their inverters in different regions.
Note: Manufacturers of utility-interconnected photovoltaic inverters are required to obtain the mandatory BIS/CRS Registration to launch their products in the Indian market.

About The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)
The erstwhile Indian Standards Institution (now Bureau of Indian Standards) was established in the year 1947 with the objective of harmonious development of standardization activity in India. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) was established under the BIS Act, 1986 for the harmonious development of the activities of standardization, marking and quality certification of goods and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. Basic Requisites for BIS Licence
Obtaining a BIS Licence hinges on four key pillars:
1. Manufacturer: The BIS Licence is exclusively granted to manufacturers, not importers or sellers. Importers can act as the Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) of a foreign manufacturer to submit the application, but the licence is issued to the manufacturer.
2. Manufacturing Address: A valid manufacturing address must be provided. If a manufacturer operates multiple factory locations for the same product, each location requires a separate BIS Licence.
3. Product: Each product needs its own licence. However, multiple models within the same product category can be covered by a single licence.
4. Brand/Trademark: Each brand or trademark must have its own BIS licence.
BIS Registration Procedure
The BIS registration process for amplifiers under IS 616:2017 varies based on the geographic location of the manufacturing unit. The processes differ for domestic (Indian) and foreign manufacturers.

1. Select BIS Recognized Testing Organization: Ensure the testing laboratory is recognized by BIS and has a valid licence.
